Designing a Space for Music

Frank Gehry and his team engaged in an unprecedented traffic between handcraft and digital tooling in developing designs for the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Originally used in the apparel market, Tencel® fiber is soft yet strong, and easy to care for. When mixed with natural fibers, Tencel® is the perfect fabric enhancer, adding strength, color absorbency and a soft drape. Danielle and her client developed the idea of bringing Tencel®, combined with natural fibers, into the home market. Vance Street Capital ("Vance Street"), a Los Angeles based private equity firm, today announced it has partnered with Keltec Technolab Inc's...

Twelve years ago, Eberle dared imagine the fabrication of furniture that truly took the design intent to its furthest conclusion – furniture that didn’t merely blend well, but was organically part of the entire scheme. They developed a spare, streamlined tooling process that did not involve heavy investment in molds and allowed them to move swiftly from idea to fabrication. The EDI target for quality is to maintain and to improve the quality of products and service, in order to consistently meet or exceed customer requirements and internal needs. EDI believes that Standards play a vital part in the design, production, and distribution of products destined for both national and international commerce and benefit all by improving safety. Hundreds of thousands of sketches, drawings, physical and digital models, photographic images, documentation, and various ephemera spanning nearly 300 projects comprise the Frank O. Gehry papers held at Getty Research Institute. To develop this story, Getty selected 171 highlights from our archive and augmented these with research, interviews, media capture, and 3D modeling work.

Reinventing the Organ

Ate in 1988, four designs submitted to the competition for a new concert hall in downtown Los Angeles were first unveiled to the public. Directly adjacent to the Music Center, the proposed Walt Disney Concert Hall was made possible by a $50 million gift by Lillian Disney in honor of her late husband, and the future hall was intended to serve as a new dedicated home for the LA Phil. DTank is an evolutionary step - the next level of designed environments – it is the means by which architects, designers and end-users can attain the full expression of their vision for the spaces they build.

The way EDI defines superior customer service is to understand that we must go above and beyond our customer's expectations during each interaction. Designed from the inside out, the Hall was conceived with music at its center — a space for music to be heard, seen, and felt. During this time, Gehry and his collaborators developed hundreds of physical and digital models that pushed the limits of technical possibility. A home designed by Danielle Eber is distinctive for its sophisticated taste, timeless style and tailored comfort.

TRAFFIC SUPPORT

Founded in 1980, EDI has more than four decades of electronics & engineering heritage and has been directly enabling smart and safe infrastructure across the traffic, parking & access, emergency response and rail segments. As part of the transaction, EDI’s existing management team will continue to lead the day-to-day business operations. T the project's inception, the building’s exterior form was to be worked out through an iterative process of constructing models by hand.

With the concert hall shoebox at the center, the building’s various programmatic requirements were fleshed out with hand-cut elements in wood representing stairs, elevators, mechanical systems, offices, and other “secondary” spaces. Placed on the site, these various elements together suggested how the concert hall’s monumental form could be broken down to meet the urban context at a more human scale. At the building's literal and conceptual center is the concert hall itself, an interior space whose development in many ways directed the overall scheme for the building. Inspired by her travels, family and friends, and fashion, Emma always knew she wanted to be an interior designer. After training at the New York School of Interior Design Emma has worked on a wide array of projects all over the world.

Consumer Products & Retail

As part of the transaction, EDI will become part of Vance Street's traffic and pedestrian safety ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) platform, which is comprised of Polara Enterprises ("Polara") and Carmanah Technologies ("Carmanah"). Eberle Design, Inc., founded in 1980, is owned by Road Infrastructure, Inc. and provides traffic and access control professionals with reliable, high-tech intersection safety monitoring and vehicle detection component products that offer value added and significant lifecycle cost benefits. When, at an early stage, he visited Hans Scharoun's Berlin Philharmonie, Gehry found himself in awe of Scharoun's organ for the immediate power and dynamic presence it afforded the hall.
